Danbury Cricket Club played Fairfield CC to kick off the 2013 season this past Sunday, the 7th.. It was relatively cool for this time of the year.. gusting winds with some clouds made conditions tough, but Danbury managed to score approx 130 on the board .. It was enough as Fairfield was bowled for under 100. Abid Zafar and Adeel Muhammed had a great partnership and both scored 30s and newcomer Nabeel made a nice quickfire 17. In the field, Abid again took 3 wickets, and captain Atif Zafar bagged 4 to clean them up. Great team effort! Scorecard to follow soon..
Hello everyone, start knocking that bat in... cleaning those uniforms, and stretching those legs out ... warm up for the season, its getting close...
Yesterday the Danbury Cricket Ground witnessed a re-union of sorts, we saw the previous generation of Danbury CC face a newer generation of Danbury CC.. Formers members, older members, newer and younger members alike, all came together to play the 2 nd Annual Over 30 vs Under 30 Cup. Last year the Under 30 took the 3 games series and this year the Over 30 were looking to take revenge and win the cup!
The Under 30 won the toss and put the Over 30 into bat. The Over 30 wanted to hold their wickets and launch towards the end and Mirza Shah and Mirza Ghafoor opened and both provided a solid stand along with Zia Ur Rehman who was patient and batted through 15 overs for his 26 runs. The Under 30 failed to get a wicket in the first 10 overs. At the 15 over mark the score was only 41, due to some good bowling in bowler friendly conditions by Karan Singh, Nabeel Khan, Owais Raza and skipper Abid Zafar. But the next 15 overs saw 120+ runs thanks to Mohammed Adeel (34), Mikey Verma (50*) and Sammy Verma (26*). Mikey in particular hit 2 consecutive straight sixes near the batting cage, and Sammy actually ran 4 runs in one stroke and both had an unbeaten 71 run partnership.
The Over 30 were pretty confident with a large total and a veteran bowling attack. The Under 30 would have to play out of their skin to chase this total. The wicket and field were drying up so the batting was to become a little easier, but with an asking rate of 5.6, it was a tough ask.
Nabeel and Karan opened the batting and looked solid from the get go. Adnan Khaliq and Sammy Verma bowled very disciplined but were unlucky. The batsman pinched cheeky singles and ran hard between the wicket. Nabeel lived a little dangerously with a couple tough chances but continued to rotate the strike and take advantage of the large open spaces with a handful of threes and the first wicket didn’t fall until Hitender Kumar (their team mate) was brought on to bowl with the score in the 90s. Nabeel ended with 73, and then Karan (34) was removed shortly thereafter in the 40s, both fell to Hitender. Mikey than bowl magnificently with some clever slower deliveries and ran through the lineup with 4 wickets.
The chase became tough as the Under 30 needed about 50 runs from 10 overs, and had about half the team back in the dugout. The Over 30 bowled some tighter spells but it was the addition of Jay Singh on the Under 30, who was originally slated for the Over 30, that changed the game. Jay came in to bat and also saw a couple wickets tumble, but kept his cool. Under 30 needed 24 from 4 overs, and Jay (30*)single handedly saw the chase home. The climatic shot was his Six from a loopy full toss over extra cover in the 27 th over. Under 30 won in the 29 th over with 8 balls to spare and 2 wickets in hand
Great game, thanks to everyone for playing, many names I didn’t mention, but everyone chipped in and it was great seeing old faces back at the Danbury Cricket Ground! See attached scorecard.
